I’m Belinda, the Mum behind The Comfort Mama. When I was pregnant with my daughter I searched high and low for comfortable clothes that looked great. I wanted a dress that was easy to wear and which could also take me through pregnancy and still be worn for a long time afterwards. That meant finding something that was easy to feed in, still looked stylish and could be dressed up or down. Unfortunately the usual maternity styles just didn’t fit the bill.
I wasn’t able to find what I wanted before my daughter was born so I decided to start making my own. I’ve worked in retail for many years, including opening and operating hundreds of stores across Australia and America, and then working for designer brands in the UK after I met my husband. I took inspiration from other dress designs that weren’t marketed as maternity wear, but which I knew would be perfect for Mums with a few changes. I’d also become part of a community of breastfeeding mums online and knew that there was a huge appetite for stylish clothes that were easy to feed in but which didn’t look like maternity clothes (and that would last for both pregnancy and beyond!).
I was already working with a UK based dressmaker to create samples when I met the amazing Carissa Heath, creator of ‘The Comfort Mama’ brand. I’m originally from Australia so was delighted to find someone creating a beautiful brand in my home country. We immediately clicked and in 2018 she decided to pass the business over to me as she was pregnant with her second child, and was super busy with her other businesses.
One of my main goals in life is to support other Mamas. For me that starts with creating a dress that makes life easier, but there’s more to it than that. Your body changes so much during pregnancy and in the early stages of your new baby’s life, and I know how it feels not to fit back into your favourite jeans. My aim in creating The Comfort Mama dresses was to enable women to feel great about how they look. They’re so easy to wear and look more stylish than oversized tees and baggy dresses. (And no judgement here if you wear it to bed and then again the next day- I've been there!).
When you’ve got a new baby in the house people tend to drop in unexpectedly. (And thats totally ok as long as they've brought cake or wine!). I found that my dresses allowed me to feel confident and put together, even if I was rocking the usual 'mum bun' and hadn't left the house. If I needed to dash out to the shops for more nappies (or a much needed coffee!) I didn’t have to worry about getting changed. I'd just pop on some slides or cool sneakers, grab the baby bag and off we went. I wanted to give that gift to other Mamas too. Knowing that a new Mama can pull on one of my dresses and instantly feel more confident in their own skin gives me a huge buzz – I just want to share it with everyone! It doesn’t just work for new Mamas either. I’m still wearing my dresses two years after giving birth.
Of course, it doesn’t stop there. Back in Australia I’ve been working with COPE – The Centre for Perinatal Excellence. They’re a non-profit organisation devoted to improving pre and post-natal mental health. They’ve done some amazing work so I’m now looking for other charity partners both inside and outside Australia to build on that.
